Denver Trip 2015
The Shelby FFA traveled to Denver, Colorado this January for 7 days. We had a total of 52 students that attended this trip. We traveled through Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. While on this trip, the FFA took many ag related and non-ag related tours. For example, we went to Indianapolis Speedway. Unfortunately, we could not take a lap around the track due to the weather. However, we did have a great time exploring the museum. We went to the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, Missouri. The arch was closed, but we went into The Gateway's Old Court House and toured it. We toured Boot Hill Museum, it was a great representation of the old west. We also toured a Cattle Ranch, Feed Yard, The National Western Stock Show, Breeding Facilities, John Deere and The Museum of Science Industry. These tours were very educational as well as enjoyable. Our chapter is very fortunate to be able to attend trips such as these. We are also very fortunate for the support our chapter receives from the community. Our members made countless memories on this trip and experienced things that are a once and a life time opportunities
2015 Banquet
This year at our chapter's annual FFA banquet which was held on May 9th, we had over 400 members and guests present. The amount of guests that attended our banquet was wonderful. It meant so much to our members to see all of the support from our families and community. We decided to show how much it meant to us by honoring those who have donate to our organization with an award of appreciation. Our banquet was not only about recognizing those who have helped us throughout the year, but it was also about recognizing our members and how much they had accomplished over the year. We have many members that truly excel in our Ag program whether it is class work, shop work, or the community service activities, these students truly give it their all. We award a leadership pin to those who show these outstanding qualities. This year we gave 26 leadership pins. There are 4 degrees that you can receive through FFA the first is your Green Hand Degree to receive this degree you have to be a first year member and take a small quiz. This year we gave 49 Green Hand Degrees. 2nd year members can receive their Chapter Degrees, to earn your Chapter Degree you must be a 2 year member and take a quiz showing you have gained more knowledge about FFA over the last year. This year we gave 24 Chapter Degrees. This year we had 11 members receive their State Degree. Only the top 2% of FFA members receive their State Degree. Also this year we had 4 members from our chapter receive their American Degree. The American Degree is the highest degree you can receive and only less than half of one percent of FFA members receive this degree.

It's An FFA Christmas
The Shelby FFA brought a little bit of holiday joy to the Shelby High School yesterday. With the hope of breaking up the monotony of finals week, we hosted a school wide ugly sweater contest. It was judged by the principal Mr Gies, the vice principal Mr Calver, and the High School’s two office workers, Mrs Haney, And Mrs Kurtzmen. The top 3 ugliest sweaters got an early Christmas present, 1st place won a $25 gift card to Subway, 2nd won a $15 gift card, and 3rd won a $10 gift card. However the fun for the FFA members didn’t end there. After the monthly meeting we went 200 tacos in 5 minutes during the taco eating contest. The winner from the boys division was Bryan Oden eating 8 ½ tacos, the winner of the girls division was Macy Lynch eating 5 tacos. Overall it was a good way to end the semester and generated some much needed laughs.
Making Parliamentary Pros
After weeks of practice, countless taps of the gavel, and many early morning practices the day had come when both Varsity and JV teams would be put to the test. It was the sub district parliamentary procedure contest. Both teams placed 3rd in sub districts.
Paying it Forward and Paying it Back
On Wednesday December 3rd the Shelby FFA delivered a check to the City of Shelby for $681.14. This Spring the Shelby FFA took advantage of the 16 acres in front of the waste water treatment plant, and planted it to beans with the help of Fred and Charlie Cooke for a learning lab. This field was a bit of a test of new technology this year, because we planted it to twin rows. With this new way of planting we yielded 44.2 bushel per acre, but at some places in the field yielded upwards of 70 bushel per acre. We concluded that our low average was greatly associated with the woodchuck problems and all the trees blocking sunlight. We also took a nontraditional way of paying rent. Instead of paying rent for these acres we made a deal with the City stating that, after harvest we would write a check to the city for 10% of our gross profit from that ground. The City of Shelby would then distribute this check to a local charity that could best use the money.
This year Shelby FFA grossed $6811.40 on just the the 16 acres in front of the water treatment plant. This was would’ve never been possible without the help of Charlie and Fred Cooke who not only planted, but also harvested, and hauled our corn this year. We would also like to thank Midwood for spraying our crops this year, but ultimately the community around us makes everything we do possible. The Community is fueling the growth of future agriculturalist and for that we are extremely grateful.

Shelby FFA Knows Their Dirt
|
Shelby FFA put their knowledge to the test, at the Richland County soil judging competition. There are two different competitions within all soil judging competitions. There’s Rural, which is where you judge the soil like you would be trying to farm it, and you give suggestions on how they should farm it to get the best crops. The second kind is Urban, this is when you judge it as if you were going to build a house on it, and you tell them how they would overcome the problems they might run into when building their house.
our urban team won second as a team and our rural team won first, with Morgan Vogt placing first, Morgan Guthrie Placing 2nd overall, and Charlie Vogt placing 3rd. In districts the urban team placed 3rd with Kristen Eisenhauer placing 3rd overall individually, letting them advance to state, and the rural team placed 8th as a team. Both Teams advanced to districts in Wellington Ohio. The Rural team consisted of Morgan Vogt, Charlie Vogt, Morgan Guthrie, Alexis Manning, and Becca Hostetter. The Urban team consisted of Kristen Eisenhauer, Kane Wagner, Faith Gosser, Kaitlyn Evans, and Macie Bricker. The Rural Team placed 8th as a team. The Urban team placed 3rd as a team and advanced to the state level. At state soil judging the Urban Team placed 16th out of 383 teams. With the placing as follows, Kristen Eisenhauer, 7th, Kane Wagner, 58th, Faith Gosser, 94th, Macie Bricker, 168th. Overall this years soil judging teams were very successful. |
District Soil Judging Competition
The district soil judging competition was held at Lorain County JVS on September 30. Shelby FFA had both an urban and rural team competing that day. Both urban and rural teams must take a test on the soil survey book, take a general knowledge test, and judge four pits the day of the event. The teams that place in the top five at districts move on to the state level.
The urban team placed third in the district which means they move on to the state judging competition. The top four individuals on the team were Kristen Eisenhauer, Kane Wagner, Faith Gosser, and Kaitlyn Evans. Kristen Eisenhauer ended up placing third individual out of the whole event. Urban soil judging consists of evaluating land uses and limitations for buildings with basements, septic tank and absorption fields, driveways and local roads, and lawns, gardens, and landscaping. The urban team must also decide on recommended management practice for the land.
The rural team placed eighth in the district, so they will not move on to state judging. The tops four individuals on the team were Morgan Vogt, Charlie Vogt, Alexis Manning, and Morgan Guthrie. Rural soil judging consists of judging the pit in five areas that include slope, erosion, texture of the soil, depth, and drainage. Based on what they choose in these areas they then choose recommended conservation practices for the land.
Shelby FFA would like to thank all those who participated in district soil judging and congratulate both teams and top individuals for their success. We also wish the urban team good luck at the state competition.

Field Day and The Tailgate Party
The Shelby FFA stayed busy all day on 9/19/14. The day started with Prep of the shop and table set up for the 2014 field day. At noon the students got to sit down and eat lunch with local farmers. While everyone enjoyed an awesome lunch, Adison Niese, Kaitlyn Evans, and Haley Evans were teaching students as well as farmers about modern issues and technologies in agriculture such as; superweeds, roundup ready beans, and twin rows. We also had bean plants from our test plot out, so farmers could see how the different populations affected the plant.
After the field day the craziness didn't end. When the cleanup was done we started the set up for the FFA Tailgate party, at the practice field in front of the Shelby Football Field. This tailgate party was in appreciation for anyone who donated to the Shelby FFA Alumni Buyers Club. It’s safe to say friday was a busy day but in the end both events had a good attendance and went very smoothly.

Shelby FFA Takes On The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
The Shelby FFA Officer Team was challenged to do the ALS Ice Bucket by their advisor Randy Eisenhauer. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a worldwide challenge, in which you dump a bucket of ice water on your head, and then nominate someone else to do it they have 24 hours to get a little wet or donate money to the ALS fund.
This challenge is spreading through Shelby like a disease even teachers are getting into the spirit. Mr Mongold, a Science teacher at Shelby High School Nominated Mr Eisenhauer the Ag teacher as well as the FFA advisor at the high school. Mr Eisenhauer then nominated the Shelby FFA Officer Team; President, Addison Niese, Vice President, Kristen Eisenhauer, Secretary, Kaylin Studer, Treasurer, Kaitlyn Evans, Reporters, Morgan Vogt, and Mackenzie Metzger, Student Advisor, Macie Bricker, Parliamentarians, Tim Coleman, and Derek Swank, Chaplin, Haley Evans and Historian, Katie Bowman.
The officer team accepted the challenge. But when we heard the word bucket in the name ALS Ice Bucket Challenge we took it seriously. We used the Shelby FFA tractor bucket filled with over 300 gallons of water and 2 ½ ice machines worth of ice. We did our part and we challenged Willard FFA, Plymouth FFA, and Buckeye FFA to do theirs.
If you would like to see the video it is on the Shelby FFA Facebook Page and you can see on our FFA instagram page @shelbyffa

Shelby FFA Represented at the Ohio State Fair
Megan Rothhaar and her Reserve Champ ROS Angus Steer
(Sept. 1, 2012) Every year 4-H and FFA exhibitors from all over Ohio bring their best livestock, knowledge and skills to the Ohio State Fair. This year three members of the Shelby FFA participated in the state fair; all hoping to be successful against the tough competition. Brianna Gwirtz, Megan Rothhaar, and Kristen Wasilewski represented the Shelby FFA at the Ohio State Fair.
Brianna Gwirtz participated in the state goat skillathon. During the skillathon she had to identify different goat products, explain several goat diseases and solve different scenarios. Brianna also had to identify the anatomy of a goat and then explain the physiology that went along with it. Brianna was very successful in the skillathon and placed third in the sixteen year old division.
Megan Rothhaar, a first year market steer exhibitor, took her Angus steer to the state fair. She placed first in her market class and later won Reserve Champion ROS steer in the Angus division. Despite it being her first year showing a market steer, Megan brought home her first piece of hardware; an Ohio State Fair banner.
Kristen Wasilewski exhibited her sheep at the Ohio State Fair. Kristen participated in showmanship, skillathon and market classes. She placed twelfth out of thirty competitors in her showmanship class. She also got first place with her record book in her age division during the skillathon. Unfortunately the tough competition got the best of Kristen’s sheep in the market classes. But she didn’t let that get her down; she was later awarded a plaque during the championship drive for her efforts and hard work.
The Shelby FFA is very proud of these three members for working hard this summer in order to participate in the state fair. The competition at the Ohio State Fair is much tougher than that of the county fairs. Each exhibitor must go above and beyond the typical standards of their projects in order to excel at the state fair.

Banquet Awards Many FFA Members
On May 11, 2012 the Shelby FFA hosted their annual end-of-the-year banquet. The banquet began with a welcome from retiring FFA president Kaitlyn Eisenhauer and a prayer from the retiring chaplain, Logan Vail. The dinner was provided by Hostetler Catering and consisted of honey Dijon chicken, pork tenderloin, fettuccine Alfredo, broccoli and cheese, cheesy potatoes and a variety of fruits and vegetables, followed by dessert. Following the meal, the retiring officer team officially began the program with opening ceremonies. Mr. Gies, Shelby High School principal gave a welcoming speech to the FFA members and their guests. After the brief speech from Mr. Gies, all of the judging and CDE teams were recognized and given awards for their achievements. First year members of the Shelby FFA were then called forward to receive their Greenhand Degrees. The Greenhand Degrees are given to FFA members who have successfully completed a semester in agricultural science. Second year FFA members were then awarded with their Chapter Degrees. To obtain a Chapter Degree, members must have completed one project and two years of agricultural science along with a few other requirements. Ryan Niedermier, Walker Fackler, Ross Jones and Andy Stockmaster were then called forward to be recognized for earning their State Degree. The State Degree is the highest degree you can earn as a high school FFA member. Next certificates of appreciation were awarded to active supporters of the Shelby FFA. In addition to the certificates of appreciation, the FFA also gave out a few special awards to “key” supporters. Due to the new Ag barn, these special recipients received a large key with their name engraved on it. There will also be an additional, identical key which is now placed in the office of the new Strauch-Agriscience Center for future generations to appreciate everything these donors have done for the Shelby FFA. Scholarships were then awarded to hard working seniors who are involved in the FFA. The Al Schumacher Scholarship, presented by Louise Robinson, was won by Kaitlyn Eisenhauer. Mr. Fred Cooke presented the Strauch Agricultural Scholarship to Ted Herr. Roger Niese presented a scholarship in honor of his brother Charles L. Niese to Charles Hebble. Christina Howell came forward and presented Kaitlyn Eisenhauer with the Egner Farms Scholarship. Mr. Eisenhauer awarded the last three scholarships. Going Out With Our Boots on- Denver 2012
(Jan. 25, 2012) On the morning of Saturday, January 14th Shelby FFA members gathered in the parking lot of Shelby High School and loaded onto a bus. At 6:30 the bus left Shelby and departed to Denver, Colorado. The Ag. students of Shelby High School were in for the trip of a life time.
After a few hours on the road the students arrived at Indianapolis Speedway. FFA members and chaperons were able to tour the museum at the speedway. When they were finished, the students piled back onto the bus and headed to Collinsville, Illinois, where they would spend the night.
On Sunday morning FFA members as well as their chaperons were up bright and early. They ate breakfast and were back on the bus by 9:00 A.M. In about an hour they arrived at the Gateway Arch. While at the arch, students toured the museum beneath the arch. They also had the opportunity to climb into a pod and go all the way up to the top of the arch. FFA members marveled at the great view that could be seen from the top of the Gateway Arch. Later, the group toured Anheuser Busch. FFA members were able to see how beer was brewed and how the whole process affected agriculture. Following the Anheuser Busch tour, the students departed for Witchita, Kansas.
The next day FFA members headed out on the dirt roads of Kansas to visit the Kingman Ranch.
Kingman Ranch is a cattle farm owned and operated by Gordon Stuckey. Here the students were informed about the ups and downs of raising cattle. Mr. Stuckey told students that he loved his job and also really loved living in Kansas. After Kingman Ranch they headed to Winter Feed Yard. Winter Feed Yard is home to 30,000 head of cattle. Cattle are brought there to be fed out and then sent to a packing plant to be slaughtered and sold to consumers. Boot Hill Museum was the next stop for these young FFA members. Boot hill was an old western town located in Dodge City, Kansas. The Museum contained old guns, clothing, and provided a look into the life of an old western town. After Boot Hill the group was in for a long bus ride. They traveled from Kansas to Denver, Colorado; a total of 341 miles. Fortunately the students and chaperons had a very nice hotel waiting for them in Denver. They stayed at Embassy Suits. Here the FFA members were able to swim and enjoy some down time.
Tuesday was the big day for these lucky FFA members. It was the day of the National Western Livestock Show. The livestock show was the main event of the trip. FFA members were able to watch many livestock shows and walk around the trade show. They could also walk through the stock yards and look at animals that people were showing in the shows. FFA members had the opportunity to see many expensive and very nice looking animals. The trade show included many vendors selling anything from cowboy boots to animal furs. Many students say that the National Western Livestock Show was the highlight of the trip. After a long and exciting day at the livestock show, the group ate some dinner and then attended a pro rodeo. The rodeo included bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing, calf roping, and many other entertaining events.
The next morning students and chaperons were up and ready to leave the hotel by 6:30. At 7:45 they arrived at the United States Mint in Denver. There, they toured the mint and learned how coins were made. They also learned the history of our county and its money. The tour of the mint ended the students' stay in Denver, Colorado. Everyone got back on the bus and departed for Hastings, Nebraska.
When they got to Hastings the group was quickly checked into their hotel and enjoyed a night of swimming and playing cards.
On Thursday the students and chaperons visited the Meat and Animal Research Center. They went on a bus tour of sheep and cattle feed lots. The students learned more about the relations between the animals and consumers. After the research center the group headed to Hawkeye Breeders. Hawkeye Breeders collects semen for customers who artificially inseminate their animals. Hawkeye is also home to award winning bulls such as, Nutter Butter and Choppin Wood.
The next morning the FFA members and their chaperons toured John Deere Harvester Works and John Deere Seeding Group. John Deere Harvester is where the company builds their famous combines. The Ag. students were lead around 71 acres of factory. They were able to have an inside look at how the newest farm equipment is manufactured. Post tour, the students got back on the bus and left for Chicago. Despite the horrible winter weather, the group safely arrived in Chicago. That evening FFA members where treated to a dinner and a few hours at Dave and Buster's.
Saturday was the the final day of the Denver trip. Shelby FFA students spent their day at the Museum of Science Industry. The museum is home to many exhibits including, trains, coal mines, airplanes, farm technology, and weather. This trip allowed students to explore the world of science outside of agriculture. Following the museum trip FFA members went to lunch at Hard Rock Cafe. Unfortunately Hard Rock was the last stop for these small town kids. The excitement of the trip was winding down. Everyone was back on the bus and it was time to head back to Shelby,Ohio.
The FFA trip to Denver, Colorado will surely be remembered. Shelby students were able to see everything from the plains of Kansas to the mountains of Colorado. The trip opened the eyes of the Ag. students and showed them the many different aspects of agriculture. FFA members returned home with many awesome memories and a greater appreciation of the agricultural world.
